Letterbox-HYbrId
What is a
Letterbox? Letterboxing is another
intriguing pastime, similar to
Geocaching, that combines navigational skills and rubber stamp
artistry in a charming "treasure hunt" style outdoor quest. Unlike
Geocaching, Letterboxing does not use coordinates and a GPS, and
instead relies on clues to locate the treasure (...more information
& history). Once located, visitors use
rubber stamps to record their visit and share a little art in the
process.
What is a
Letterbox-Hybrid? A Letterbox-Hybrid
is a combination of Letterboxing and Geocaching where the owner has
also included GPS coordinates to the Letterbox
container. Along with the
traditional logging items, rubber
stamps are also included but not
intended for trade; the stamps are meant to remain in the box so
that visitors can use them to record their visit.
Lincoln's Letterbox:
You are looking for a 30 Cal Ammo Can hidden in the
Wichita Wild Habitat Area of Garvey
Park. Located at 3499 S. Washington St. in the "South City"
neighborhood, this 35 acre park and preserve include a playground,
bike path along the Arkansas River, concrete canoe launch,
restrooms, picnic tables, shelter, and even a public garden called
the
Garden of Eatin'. Although prohibited here, ATV's have made
some well developed trails that can help you navigate throughout
the area. Be careful when venturing off the trails and out into the
prairie grass as there are lots of large burrow's to fall in and
tons of hidden cactus to stick you. Please try and Leave No Trace
while visiting the area and CITO where
possible.
Want to try Letterboxing the old fashioned way?
Ditch the coordinates and navigate to
Garvey Park located on the south side of Wichita at 3499 S.
Washington St, along the east side of the Arkansas River. Once
here, head west to the playground and locate the southwestern tree
atop the hill, closest to the sidewalk, just south of a light pole
in the playground, and west of another along the sidewalk. Walk
approximately 200 paces south, down the bank, across the sidewalk,
through the field veering west slightly until you come to an ATV
trail. Take this trail south approximately 130 paces until you see
a good sized tree on the left hand side of the trail. The Letterbox
is in the center of a large hedge tree about 30 paces to the east.
Good Luck, and Happy Stamping.
