Sunday Morning Hiking Series #28 - Bowman Fork
Trail
8am-12pm
Series Description
For those new to this hiking series, these are social hikes
around the Salt Lake area for the purpose of caching, enjoying the
outdoors, and getting to know fellow cachers. There tends to be a
range of fitness levels that show up for the hikes. As the emphasis
is on being social, don't worry if a steep leaves you puffing. I'll
be right there clinging to a tree and puffing with you. Our usual
meeting time is 8am, and we leave the parking area by 8:05am. The
other primary feature of these hikes is that they are short and can
be accomplished by noon. Trails tend to be a little emptier on
Sunday mornings and we'll be done in time for anyone who has Sunday
obligations to attend an afternoon service. If you don't have to be
anywhere in the afternoon, there's frequently a longer trail to
take. If you would like more information about the whole series of
hikes, check out the others in the series in the bookmark list at
the right.
Description for this Hike
I'm putting a disclaimer on this description. I have not made
this hike and I am typing from my memory of reading the
description. If we are to have this event I must get it published
rather than wait until my guide book and I are in the same place
again. With that in mind, here's the general game plan.
It's October so it's time for the fall colors hike. I worry
every year that the colors we'll have peaked by the time we get out
there, yet we've never been disappointed. I won't argue with
success, so we will hike the same weekend of October in the same
canyon that we have for the past two years.
We will start from the Terraces picnic area. Essentially the
same place we started for the February hike with the exception we
will start hiking at the trail head rather than the turnoff from
the main road--the convenience of the gate being open.
The main goal of the hike will be the saddle between Mt Raymond
and Gobbler's Knob, which is the top of Mill B Basin on the Big
Cottonwood side. Reaching and returning from that spot can be done
in four hours. If we go at our usual leisurely pace you may want to
allow yourself a bit more time, or plan to turn back sooner. The
top of White Fir Pass may be a good goal for some
For those who want the long hike, we can head up either Mt
Raymond or Gobbler's Knob. Knowing that some regulars have done one
or the other, I won't commit to either now letting the pleasure of
the group decide once we're there. If anyone really wants to go for
the gusto, the EXTRA long hike, both peaks can be done in a day,
but you may want to be sure you headlamp is in your pack just to be
safe.
This hike will be on an odd numbered day in Mill Creek Canyon so
dogs are allowed. Remember there is a $3 fee to exit the canyon if
you do not have an anual pass which can be purchased upon exiting
for $42.
The regular attendees of these hikes usually do a great job of
playing fair with puzzles. Just a head's up to keep that practice
going, there are many puzzle finals along this trail.
