Craig Dunain was one of the oldest established Victorian psychiatric hospitals in Scotland, with the main building completed in 1864. It closed in 2000.

It was a Grand Victorian 2-3 storey asylum extending to 45 bays with two water towers, and two taller decorative towers in red Tarradale sandstone with many outbuildings including the modern 1963 chapel, laundry, main hall and mortuary. It was small by UK asylum standards but housed 2000 patients from all over the Highlands at its peak.

This category B listed building has now been aquired by a building firm who have built a new hospital, New Craigs, further down the road. The old building is currently being converted into luxurious flats.

I watched a drama on Sky recently about an old asylum that had been converted into flats and it certainly would put me off buying one!!!

The new hospital has a very reasonably priced cafe doing breakfast, lunch and dinner. Everyone welcome. This is where the GGH staff go at lunch time instead of our own canteen.
