The Red Mill Sawmill, part of Manitoulin Island's (Little Current)pioneer history.
The Red Mill Sawmill was the town of Little Current’s first big saw mill, built in 1886 by Mr. Charles Anderson, who owned the mill until his untimely death at age 54 in 1896. The Hope Lumber Company built a much larger mill on the Red Mill site, which also supplied electricity to the town. The old smoke stack and other concrete structures are still visible on the site.
Mr. Anderson was also a building contractor who built Little Current and Howland Public Schools and the United Church Manse.
The remains of the Picnic Island sawmill is visible from the cache site. While searching, take time to view the historical plaque's and the islands attractions.
This cache is dedicated to the memory of the Red Mill Sawmill.
