Swallows2: This one seems to get flooded a lot so best archive it at our age. Try to give people entertainment but does not always work.

Geocache Description:

Parking for car very close. Great for kids. Doggies welcome on lead. Some steps to start. Cache by kind permission of Northumberland Wildlife Trust.

Bit bigger than film canister type cache with odds and ends in. plus logbook and pencil. This small nature reserve is managed by Northumberland Wildlife Trust. The site is on a former claypit for a local brick and tile works and contains a number of relatively small and shallow ponds and areas of scrub. The ponds and their margins contain plants typical of this sort of habitat including: broad-leaved pondweed (potomogeton natans), yellow flag iris (Iris pseudacornus), water plantain (Alisma plantago-aquatica) and lesser spearwort (Ranunculus flammula). Reedmace (Typha latifolia) also occurs around the main pond. Areas of scrub contain trees such as hawthorn and willow. The grassland areas contain a good variety of relatively common species such as cowslip (Primula veris).

The ponds form a habitat for great-crested newt, common frog and common toad. The birdlife of the site is limited due to its small size but common species of 'garden' bird occur as do moorhen, linnet, sedge warbler and reed bunting. The ponds are generally shallow and all but the largest are susceptible to drying out providing a useful habitat for some insect life.
