Located on West Ironbound Island
Tobacco can clad in black tape at the base of a spruce, posted
coordinates to show our approach to the island via boat. At 120
acres, West Ironbound is one of the larger of the LaHave Islands,
but rarely visited due to the ruggedness of its coastline and the
rough waters around the island. Use caution, the area is open
ocean! The island care taker and sheep herder asks visitors to the
island not to bring any dogs due to spooking the sheep which could
cause the young lambs to become abandoned by their mothers. This
cache will require a watercraft, once on the island hike the fields
past the island's new and old foundations. It is located on a vista
overlooking the Atlantic, the blow hole or sea cave can be heard
from the cache location just a 100metres away! The island is home
to the sheep that roam the cliffs and drumlins, make sure to visit
the light station while visiting it is well worth the view. West
Ironbound has to be our favorite of the islands to visit, its just
awesome here.
The island also holds ecological significance as it is home to a
great blue heron rookery, one of only three known to be located on
the entire South Shore. The agricultural heritage was spawned 150
years ago when the first lighthouse was established on the island,
and its keepers, the Wolfe Family, began farming sheep there who
are the only year long residents. Enjoy your visit!
