Hermit Rock Hike Cache
Here's another Geo-Secret Agent hike, ammo can cache, in the
fabulous Sierra Nevada Mountains with some incredible
views.
Hermit Rock is a mountain summit in Tulare County in the state of
California (CA). Hermit Rock climbs to 8,419 feet (2,566.11 meters)
above sea level.
This cache is readily accessible in the warmer months, however in
winter it is not recommended due to the large amount of snow fall
and road closures.
There is parking available at the Lewis Camp Parking area or at the
coordinates on the fire road I have listed below. The route I chose
followed a rarely used and not well marked trail with some minor
"bushwhacking". According to my readings the ascent was
approximately 700 vertical feet over 1.2 miles round trip.
At the base of Hermit Rock is a fantastic area to sit, have a snack
and a drink and enjoy the views of the surrounding mountains and
valleys. See the photos below.
THE CACHE: You are looking for is an Ammo Can that is tucked nicely
into a large granite cluster. It is well protected from the
elements and please hide it well after finding it. I left a new,
unactivated geocoin for the FTF along with some other swag.
BONUS POINTS: The summit of Hermit Rock is a DELIGHT! This may
require some extra climbing skills and GEAR! I'd give the summit a
rating of 5 STAR TERRAIN so DO NOT attempt it unless you are
prepared to do so. The summit coordinates are: N 36 10.159 - W 118
30.798
ONCE AGAIN, PLEASE DO NOT attempt to summit this rock unless you
are trained and skilled enough to do so.
IMPORTANT: You will be hiking in the home of Mountain Lions,
Bears and Rattlesnakes. Before reaching into or under anything,
always clear the location with a long stick or walking pole. One
rattlesnake bite up here and your day is ruined. Let someone know
your itinerary just in case something happens along the
way.
