These used to be pineapple fields, with tufts stretching up to the mountains and saddle ridge that rings this volcanic valley with fertile, iron-enriched soil. Del Monte built a processing plant nearby to extract and process juice. Other farms did plant research in the year-round growing season of the Hawaiian Islands.
Now, visitors are the big business and the fields lie mostly fallow, giving excellent vistas in any direction.
