Stewardship is "the careful and responsible management of something entrusted in one's care".
Come By Chance signed a Municipal Wetlands Stewardship Agreement in May 1995. The agreement represents a formal public committment by the community and the province to act together to conserve wetlands for waterfowl. It empowers a community to set aside important wetlands for long-term conservation within designated areas for the benefit of present and future generations.
Wetlands are conserved within one Management Unit within Come By Chance's municipal boundary. This management unit is known as the Come By Chance Estuary Management Unit and is an important staging habitat for a variety of waterfowl species including American black duck, Green-winged teal, and Canada geese, which have been reported in excess of 200 individuals. According to local residents, more than 100 Canada geese can be observed in the estuary during peak staging periods, giving this area one of the highest concentrations of geese on the Avalon Peninsula.
The conservation of wetlands depends not wholly on conservation plans or regulations but on the stewardship ethic of residents and visitors like yourself!
