Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket, 1875
James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903)
American

This is one of Whistler’s most famous—and misunderstood—pictures. It shows a smoke-filled night sky with orange and yellow fireworks falling over a London park. Whistler wanted to convey his impression of the event rather than depict fireworks realistically. But many of his contemporaries found the image too abstract, and the painting became embroiled in an infamous lawsuit. Explore the painting and the controversy
…at your DIA.
Inside/Out brings reproductions of great treasures from the Detroit Institute of Arts into your community. Discover them all around town.

This is a three-stage multi that will take you to at least two reproductions of art in Lake Orion. Depending on your route, you may also pass many of the others in the area. There is another piece very close to the final, so please visit it along the way. At each of the first two stages you are looking for half the coordinates to the final. Stage 1 is at the posted coordinates, Stage 2 is at N42 47.021 W83 14.382. You are just looking for numbers. They can be seen without opening anything. Once you have all the coordinates, the final is a short walk away.
