Geocache Description:

The first (or the last) of a series along Putney Park Lane, a pleasant traffic free byway with medieval origins and an almost rural feel that heads south from the Upper Richmond Road to Putney Heath. Have moved this up the lane slightly to the new set of gates 50 or so meters up the Lane since the recent work done at this end of the Lane. Over the years the series has continued down to the River and up to Putney Heath.

You are looking for a small, non-standard container. A bit of history: Putney Park was an ancient manorial hunting park belonging to the Archbishops of Canterbury and later the Crown. Charles I sold it in the first half of the C17th. Putney Park Lane probably provided access to the hunting lodge at The Pleasance, a few hundred metres from the northern end, where the Lane curves around an open area. By the C18th, it had been laid out as a formal tree-lined avenue and gave access to a number of grand houses, including Granard Lodge, Gifford House, Putney Park House and Dover House. Putney Park House is the only one of the large houses still standing (located on the west side of The Pleasance, now apartments). Dover House was demolished in 1920 by the LCC to make way for the Dover House Road Estate, a cottage estate inspired by the Garden City movement in the Arts and Crafts style. North Lodge is one of the gatehouses at the ends of the Lane - the one at the southern end is not in such good condition. A fine gothic style house from around 1850 stood on the other side of this entrance to the Lane opposite the Lodge, but it was demolished around 2005, havig been abandoned, to make way for the three new new houses alongside GZ, all given names nodding to the fine old mansions on the Lane. The original cache was at the gate on the Upper Richmond Road. This was refurbished in 2018 and the cache moved a few score metres south to its current spot.
