Somerville House (238 Waterloo Row)
The manor known as Somerville House (a distortion of its original
name "Summer Villa") has gone through many changes and incarnations
in its long life. The property was built in 1816 by the Hon. John
Murray Bliss – a prominent politician and, for some months in
1824, pending the arrival of Lieutenant-Governor Sir Howard Douglas
from English, Bliss stood in his stead as "President and Commander
in Chief". It later housed many tenants and, after surviving a fire
in 1867, was redesigned with changes being made to rooflines as
well as to the interior. In 1948 Lord Beaverbrook purchased the
property as his Fredericton residence and during the 1857 fall
convocation, the house hosted honorary Doctorate recipient Senator
John F. Kennedy.
From 1969 to 1968, Somerville House was the home of the UNB Law
School, and from 1974 to 1999, it was the official residence of the
Lieutenant-Governor. Following a full restoration in 2003, it
became a family home. In 2009 the home was donated to UNB and now
serves as the official residence of the UNB president.

Maison Somerville (238, allée Waterloo)
Le manoir connu sous le nom de maison Somerville (une
déformation de son nom d'origine « Summer Villa ») a
connu nombre de changements et transformations au cours de sa
longue existence. La propriété a été construite en 1816 par John
Murray Bliss, un important homme politique. Bliss est également
connu pour avoir pendant quelques mois, en 1824, assuré la fonction
de président et commandant en chef en attendant que le
lieutenant-gouverneur sir Howard Douglas arrive d'Angleterre.
L'immeuble abrite ensuite de nombreux autres occupants et, après un
incendie en 1867, subit des transformations. Les lignes de toiture
et l'intérieur sont modifiés. En 1948, lord Beaverbrook achète la
propriété pour en faire sa résidence à Fredericton. À la remise des
diplômes de l'automne 1857, la maison accueille le sénateur John F.
Kennedy, venu recevoir un doctorat honorifique.
De 1969 à 1968, la maison Somerville abrite la faculté de droit de
l'UNB et, de 1974 à 1999, elle est la résidence officielle du
lieutenant-gouverneur. Complètement restaurée en 2003, elle devient
une maison familiale. En 2009, la maison est offerte à l'UNB. Elle
est aujourd'hui la résidence officielle du président de
l'UNB.
