Geocache Description:

A creepy multi with a hidden history lesson squeezed in at one of our VERY favorite haunts. The final is a short drive away from this sacred ground.

The posted coordinates will bring you to a wonderful, old wall, and a plaque :) THE CACHE IS NOT HIDDEN HERE. To obtain the missing digits and locate the cache, you will have to take a short walking tour through the graveyard and collect the information required at the various waypoints. Happy cachin'

THE CHURCH
Construction began in 1804 to serve a congregation oganized twelve years earlier. It included the likes of Lieutenant-Governor John Simcoe, Lieutenant-Colonel John Butler, Major-General Isaac Brock. The church served as a hospital during the first year of the War of 1812 and was converted to a barracks by the occupying American Troops in 1813 before being burned on their retreat.

THE CEMETERY
Predating the construction of the 1792 building by many years, St.Marks Cemetery is one of the oldest burial sites in Ontario. The earliest monument, dated 1784 has been placed inside the church (and is well worth a look if the doors are open during your visit). Until the 1830`s this was the burial site for the entire town and reflects the rich diversity of the community for more than 200 years.

THE FOAM GRAVES
Surrounded by an ancient iron fence, you will find the Royal Canadian Yacht Club Plot. The yacht "Foam" left Toronto and headed here many years ago. Guests of the Queen's Royal Hotel watched her lights flicker and disappear. Sadly, the following morning only the mast of the vessel showed above the water. All seven men aboard were lost. This is their final resting place.

BROCK`S ROCK
At this waypoint you wil find a very large stone of special interest. This is not a grave marker, but a rock which was originally situated by the river`s edge. Major General Sir Isac Brock used to sit on it while he studied Fort Niagara on the American side of the river during the early months ofthe War of 1812. William Kirby, a local historian and writer, had the stone moved to this spot. He later wrote...
-Yes! Set it fitly in the sacred ground,
And every year with garlands be it crowned,
Forgetting never, our deliverance stood
At the full price of his devoted blood,
The price he paid, amid the battle roar,
At Queenston Heights bear witness ever more.

THE TRENCH
This small mound is divided by what remains of a trench left from the War of 1812. Walk up this narrow, sunken pathway and imagine soldiers digging in among old graves and perhaps using old headstones to shore up the rifle pits and provide protection for themselves from any attacking forces.

THE MARKED GRAVESTONES
During the War of 1812, the buiding was being used as a hospital to treat the soldiers gruesomely wounded in battle. Among the most common wounds were limbs shattered by bullets and infected with gangrene. Surgeons had no recouse but to amputate if lives were to be saved. Deep gouges left by the sugeons tools can still be seen on several flat tombstones that served as impromptu operating beds.
