Geocache Description:

A tour of 4 of the old school sites between Chiltern and Rutherglen.

Each of the 15 or so old school sites around Rutherglen has an information board. I've chosen these 4 as being representative - most are only sites with no buildings but sometimes a few exotic trees to show where the old school was. You can find out more about all the schools by visiting the Rutherglen Museum in the Common School (open Sundays). The fact that there were all these small country schools shows how densely populated the area was at the end of the gold-mining era. You will need to read the information board at each site to get the State School number of EACH (SS below), then use it as below to work out the location of the next site. (So you use a different SS number at each Waypoint). GZ is walking distance from WP4. The whole tour will take at least an hour and entail about 40km driving. You will drive through Rutherglen between WP3 and WP4. Please be careful of fast traffic near WP4, park on West side of road. PLEASE NOTE - The sign for School #4 has gone you may need to Google a SS number! WP1 - location as above WP2 36deg 01.(SS - 574) 146deg 36.(SS-608) WP3 36deg 01.(SS-1385) 146deg 28.(SS-1717) WP4 36deg 07.(SS-1560) 146deg 28.(SS-2270) GZ 36deg 07.(SS-170) 146deg 28.(SS-841) ( example - if WP1 was State School number 1000 the location of WP2 would be 36deg 01.426 146deg 33.392) Cache when placed was a small Systema container with a small logbook, small pencil and a few coins from all over the world.
