Geocache Description:

Christchurch Earthquake Cache #6

A small cache hidden in Bottle Lake Forest Park.  Developed from a farm in the early 1900s the forest expanded from coastal protection plantings to its present size. It is planted with mostly Pinus radiata and covers over 800 hectares of coastal sand dunes.  There are mountain bike, walking, running and horse riding tracks that wander through the park.

Once you arrive at the cache location, if you look through the gap in the trees in the distance, you will be able to see piles of liquefaction which were removed from the city after the February 2010 earthquake.  Bottle Lake Forest Park has the dubious distinction of being one of the places where approximately 350000 tons of liquefaction and rubble have been deposited.  Anyone who dealt with the liquefaction after the earthquake can tell you that it has a very distinct, unpleasant smell.

If you continue on to the other caches in the area, you will no doubt get to smell the liquefaction yourself.  A good vantage point to see the waste being dumped and processed is from a shelter located on top of a man-made hill that is left over from a garbage dump.  The shelter is located at S 43 28.092 E 172 42.622.

More recently, the park has been discussed as a possible option for the relocation relocate quake-hit eastern suburbs.

The cache is easily accessible by walking paths.  If you are by foot, please avoid approaching the cache by walking on the bike trail.  Bikes can come quickly around turns and the bike trail is not wide enough to accommodate both the bikers and walkers.

Please use stealth when retrieving and replacing the cache. Bicycles can approach quickly from either direction.
