The Man on the $20 Note Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

ruralslicker: Thanks for the good times Geocaching community. Despite almost reaching the magic 1000 finds after nine years, it's sadly time to archive this cache (and myself from the Geocaching world) due to various reasons, mainly that with ongoing retirement I have a variety of new interests that take up most of my time. Thank you to everyone who logged my various caches over the years.

Geocache Description:

Close to GZ is a cairn erected in June 1988 by the Churchill & District Lions Club as a memorial to the Reverend John Flynn (“Flynn of the Inland”) (1880-1951). Part of the inscription reads “an Australian pioneer of the Flying Doctor Service, who, in 1901, was temporary head teacher at Hazelwood South State School No.3350 which stood on this site”.

Flynn's vision finally saw the establishment of 13 flying doctor bases around Australia, which continue to spread 'a mantle of safety' across 6.9 million square kilometres, or 80 per cent of the Australian continent. The Royal Flying Doctor Service remains the largest and most comprehensive aeromedical emergency and health care service in the world. Flynn was cremated and his ashes placed at rest under the Flynn Memorial, just west of Alice Springs at Mount Gillen (2406 km from Churchill). In 1956, the John Flynn Memorial Church was opened in Alice Springs as a tribute to a great Australian whose compassion, zeal and vision transformed the lives of the inhabitants of inland Australia.

An image showing the Reverend John Flynn appears on the Australian $20 banknote. Surrounding him in the design are:
(1) the fabric bi-plane “Victory” which flew the first Flying Doctor mission from Cloncurry Qld on 17 May 1928
(2) the pedal radio invented by Alfred Traeger in 1929 enabling the people of the Outback to call on the Flying Doctor for assistance
(3) the Body Chart created by Sister Lucy Garlick in 1951 and still used today. It enables patients to describe the region and intensity of their pain or injury during a remote telehealth consultation
(4) a camel signifying the five camels Flynn purchased in 1913 so that his Patrol Padres could complete their mission work throughout central Australia

This very small cache contains a log sheet (so you will need to bring your own pen). Also included is a 1969 USA silver quarter dollar coin as a swap. This is not an official geocoin. It would be nice to read of its travels to other caches in the Gippsland area and beyond.

The general area surrounding where the cairn has been placed can sometimes be fairly high in muggle activity, especially because of the nearby pub, so some patience may be required.

Please replace the container exactly where and how you found it.

As indicated in the Attributes above, this cache should only be attempted during daylight hours.

Congratulations to littlemerpip *****FTF*****
