Geocache Description:

This cache is based in Sherston, a lively village in the North of Wiltshire. This short walk will take you on a trail around some of Sherston’s most interesting features, allowing you to gather clues which will lead you to the final location! The walk around the village is very easy walking, the final cache location is however requires a little climbing.

The trail starts at the High Street, which is also the best place to park (for free!). First look for the old National School building. Until 2005, this was the primary school for the children of Sherston. Now the main hall of the school houses the village Post Office (the staff inside are an excellent source of information should you need any help with this trail!) In what year was the school building established? The second digit in the year is A.

Further down the high street you should find the Angel. This old Inn was used as offices for many years before being turned back into a pub. Look at the sign to the left of the door. The second digit is B. Notice Balcony House – Sherston’s oldest, a little further down the street. Queen Anne once slept here in 1705 on her way to Bath!

Now walk up the little lane called Swan Barton. At the top, turn left and look for the British School Room. In what year was it erected? The forth digit is C.

Turn back the other direction, and at the end of the road turn right and walk with the playground on your left. In which year were the walls of the Pennymead rebuilt? The third digit is D.

Continue towards the Rattlebone Inn. John Rattlebone is a local hero. In 1016 a battle was fought between the Danish King Cnut and the Saxon Edmund Ironside over two days in the hills around Sherston. Rattlebone fought on the Saxon side, and famously held a tile over a wound in his side so he could heroically battle on. In what year was the Wadsworth brewery established? The third digit is E.

Turn left and walk to the church. The church was re-bulit in about 1170 on the site of a Saxon foundation. In what year was the lynch gate repaired? The third digit is F and the forth digit is G.

Cross over the road and walk down Noble Street. Take the first turning on the right, onto Grove Road. A short distance along here you will find the Methodist Church. In what year did it open? The forth digit is H.

Continue to the end of Grove Road, and turn left. On the first telegraph pole on the left, what number is written on a silver circular plate? This number is I.

Continue to the bottom of the hill. Look for a fire hydrant. What number is below the number 100? This number is J.

You are now close to the cache and if you have all the answers, you should be able to find its exact location! The co-ordinates are as follows:

51° E(B-3).GHA
002° (I-C)D.(F-J)CG

Please be sensible and follow the countryside code.

The cache is a small plastic box in a camouflage bag. Hidden with log book and pencil.

Good luck!
