Langs molen Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Geocache Description:

Multi-cache langs molen i Marstal.

Multi-cache alongside the breakwater.

Langs molen

((English version below))

Dansk

A=antallet af bogstaver i kanonens navn

WP 2: N 54 50.A85 E 010 31.B87
Her står du ved lystbådehavnen.

Verdenskrig.
Den bærer inskriptionen: FØR SØMÆNDS DØD OG ENKERS GRAAD NU TRØST FOR TAB OG TAK FOR DAAD.

På mindestenen finder du et antal årstal.
E = antal årstal på mindestenen

Along the waterbreaker

English

We hope this multi can be done by non-Danish speakers too. Please read the description carefully if you are the first – then you can be our “crash test dummy” :)
The city Marstal emerged by a nature made harbour and has a long story. Several historical findings indicate that the area has been inhabited since the Stone Age, and though it was mentioned as a fishing village in 1514 and a city with shipping industry since 1634, it was not until 1825 that the building of a real harbour began. At this time the construction of the impressing waterbreaker was begun.
When building in 1825 there were of course no help from big machines available – The 1100 meter long waterbreaker in Marstal has been built by hand by the local sailors and the construction during a 50 year period!
It is told that the construction began in order to maintain the marriages in Marstal. The sailors were home in the winter, and often started arguing with their wives. That’s why they began collection big rocks instead.
It is a fact, though, that it was done manually by volunteers and that requires toil and trouble to build the impressing waterbreaker.

This multi will take you around the harbour and along the waterbreaker. A wheelchair user will be able to drive along, but might not be able to reach the cache alone
Mole gammel
The beginning of the multi
At the starting coordinates N 54 50.863 E 010 31.250 you’ll find a cannon.
If you look to South/East you can see the beginning of the waterbreaker.

A=the number of letters in the cannons name (it’s written in italic)
In order to walk along the marina you must walk on a path (in Danish “sti”) marked by a sign.
B=number of words on the sign.

WP 2: N 54 50.A85 E 010 31.B87
Now you are in the marina. If you look to South/East you can still see the waterbreaker. Towards North/East you can see the Lime Kiln (in Danish “kalkovn”). It isn’t far away… if you have a boat. If you don’t it’s a 2 km walk.

C = (the number of the pier (in Danish “bro”)) – 4

WP 3: N 54 51.C43 E 010 31.C88
Now you are stading by the old Costom House, which is now the tourist office. Across the road you will find the Maritime Museum.

D= the reduced sum of digits of the number of windows at the entrence (only by the door)

WP 3: N 54 51.3D0 E 010 31.2D5
On your way to the next waypoint we suggest you use the road behind the monument and thereby walk along the harbour.
At the waypoint you’ll find a big rock, which was raised to commemorate the toil a trouble which had to be done in order to finish the waterbreaker.
You are also right next to the mine collecting box. We call it “bombebøssen” which roughly translates into “bomb box”. A mine collecting box is an old mine, where the explosives has been replaced by a collecting box. Often money is collected for sailors’ widows or the like.
The mine was erected in 1920 by a sailor association and is from 1st world war.
On the mine you can read this inscription: FØR SØMÆNDS DØD OG ENKERS GRAAD NU TRØST FOR TAB OG TAK FOR DAAD. This very short poetic line says that the mine used to mean sailors’ death and widowers’ weeping but now it means consolation for the losses and thanks for the acts of bravery.

On the stone there are a number of years.
E = number of years
