Glenealy school is part of the English Schools Foundation (ESF), one of 20 such schools located in Hong Kong as of 2011. The ESF originally provided schooling for the children of British civil servants, and instruction is in English, but today it teaches many local Hong Kong students and students originating from neighbouring Asian countries. It is a wonderfully diverse cultural environment, with students from over 50 different nationalities. The schools have a strong reputation for delivering a quality education – over 95% of students go on to tertiary studies.
The ESF receives a subsidy (subvention) from the Hong Kong Government, in addition to charging fees to parents. The subvention is currently the subject of some controversy, and the latest two ESF schools, Renaissance College and Discovery Bay college, have opened without the subvention.
Glenealy school is a primary school (ages 5 to 11) for families zoned in the mid-levels area near Hornsey Road. It opened in January 1959, and recently celebrated its 50 year anniversary. Glenealy approaches learning through the inquiry based (“PYP”) method, and older students receive daily Mandarin lessons. Glenealy school has a vibrant academic, cultural and sporting curriculum, in keeping with the school’s motto to “Strive to Achieve”.
