Geocache Description:

This is to replace my multi cache that had existed near here. People either didn't want to do a multi-cache or had a hard time finding all stages. So I took the stage 1 cache and moved it. It is a shame to miss this little church with the lake view.

Little FTF prize inside.

This cache will lead you to St. Margaret's Roman Catholic Church - built in 1912. On the north shore of Hastings Lake, just east of Sherwood Park, Alberta, sits an old church built in 1912 from local white poplar logs. At the entry sign you will find brochures on the history of this site.

St. Margueurite Church, as it was known decades ago, was built in 1912 and served the Deville community until 1952, when services were moved to St. Jude's on Highway 14.

The church property includes a cemetery where pioneers and Métis are buried.

Over the years, various groups have cared for the land and building which, in 1984, became a mission church of OLPH parish.

When the Friends of Deville St. Margaret's officially came into being in 1998, they worked with the Métis Nation of Alberta, to which ownership was transferred in 2000.

Since then, the Friends have dug up grants to restore one of the province's only log churches.

They also hired an expert to finish mapping all the burial sites in the cemetery and are planning to ensure all graves are marked with crosses.

St. Margaret's is believed to be Strathcona's third provincially designated historic site, with Smeltzer House and the Josephburg church also specially protected.
