Geocache Description:

The third in a series of East Lothian caches inspired by places I have cycled past which have a story to tell...

During the 17th century the Gladsmuir area became notorious for its witchcraft and its persecution of those taking part or who could be accused by anyone with a grudge. A tree situated between Penston and the old manse at Penston used to be known for its frequent gatherings of witches. This is similar to Trottie True’s ‘Witches & Warlocks’ cache at Samuelston, which tells of the 13 alleged witches burned at the stake in 1661 in the field at Birley Knowe. The Rev. John Bell, Minister of Gladsmuir from 1707-1707 wrote two books on witchcraft, and wrote of how often locals would speak up to incriminate their neighbours and implicate them. Penston still exists as the small collection of houses on a sharp bend above Macmerry Industrial Estate. The manse is shown to be midway between Penston and Gladsmuir, although no trace remains in the fields now.
I cannot say if this is the spot where the witches were seen, but it seemed like too good a story, and worthy of hiding a cache for.

WELL DONE BOUNCING BALL ON FTF!!!
