The Lord's Acre

Turn onto Joe Jenkins Road and take the second left, which is a dirt lane. The cache is placed with gracious permission, so please don't block the lane or damage any plants. The cache is NOT under any plants. Do not disturb them!

The posted coordinates will take you to a picnic area near Root Cause Farm, previously known as The Lord’s Acre community garden. The present Root Cause Farm is a volunteer-staffed non-profit organization that grows seasonal fresh organic produce solely for giving away to those in need in the Fairview area. This vegetable garden is nearby, and you may look, but please don’t intrude into the gardening area without permission. If you’re interested in helping the garden as a volunteer or a donor, please ask for info by calling (828) 276-1156 ext. 1 or by visiting RootCauseFarm.org.

The original name of this garden came from a grassroots movement which was started by the Rev. Dumont Clarke in Fairview during the hard times of the 1930s and spread throughout the South and then around the world. A project of the Farmer’s Federation (an agricultural cooperative in western North Carolina which also began in Fairview and was led by James G. K. McClure, Jr. of Fairview), the idea of The Lord’s Acre was for participating farmers to pledge the produce of one acre of their crops each year “for the Lord” to help feed others. The project was extremely successful during the Great Depression years in the U.S. and was exported via missionaries to many other parts of the world. All due to the compassion and creativity of a handful of Fairview farmers!

If you are working toward the kids' Fairview prizes, be sure to write down what information useful for gardening you could get from the cache container.
