This is my first cache in a nature park. I like hunting for caches in areas such as these and always wanted to place some. You are looking for a slightly larger than quart size container with various items, a log and pencil. A new trail system will open to the public Friday.
It is the 1,173 Marshall Hampton Reserve, which is located near the intersection of State Road 540 and Thornhill Road.
The land is owned by the Southwest Florida Water Management District and managed by the Polk County Environmental Lands Program.
Admission to the trail is free. There are no facilities other than an unpaved parking area and a handful of benches and footbridges.
The trail system totals six miles and includes a 3.5 mile trail through a wooded area and a 2.5-mile trail around a 60-acre manmade lake.
The property is open daily for day use only.
"Please sign in at the information board in the parking lot near the trailhead, and note that you're there to geocache. Polk County's Environmental Lands Program is receptive to caching. Signing in shows that you appreciate this. Please be respectful of this property, its vegetation & wildlife. Make sure you grab a map of the area at the trailhead. Minor bushwhacking may be required at the cache site, please stay on designated trails until you reach the search area."
