Geocache Description:

This cache is located around the former rear entrance to St Mary's Hospital. Parking not a problem, but not permitted within the hospital grounds for caching purposes (Unless you are unfortunate enough to need medical assistance whilst logging your visit!)

From this point you may be able to witness the Demolition of part of St Marys Hospital the contract for which is due to last for most of 2012.
The works will include the demolition of all the old Victorian wards, Exton, Droxford, Catherington and Blenworth, plus the operating theatres which were built in the mid 80's.
To the north of the site is the old laundry block which was once part of the original Portsea Island Workhouse.

The workhouse opened in 1846 to provide accommodation for 1000 paupers in the Portsmouth area. Its elaborate frontage hid a world of squalor inside in which children and adults worked for long hours in return for a bed and board. The day began at 6am with prayers and breakfast and work then took place between 7am and noon. After a break for lunch work continues through to 6pm and then it was time for supper, prayers and bed at 8pm. Atypical diet consisted of bread cheese oatmeal and occasionally meat and was designed as a deterrent. Work involved pulling apart tarred rope, crushing bones, breaking flints and stones and making sacks. The workhouse was closed in 1930 and today has been converted into flats.
