Series from GEMER region - churches with medieval FRESCOES

DOBSINA

SK:

EN:
The evangelical church is located on a slope not far from the spiral-shaped high square, on a terrace, supported by a massive stone-wall. In this place a St. Valentine´s Chapel was erected at the beginning of the 14th century and a one-nave Gothic parish church was completed about 1480. As the church became too tight for all the population, it was connected together with the chapel about 1641, about 1727 the building of a transept began, but the tower in the western part of the terrace stood still alone. In 1740 the church-nave got enlarged up to the tower and the interior of the church was in 1891 reshaped and decorated in Neogothic style. As the interior renewal in 2002 was prepared, the restorers discovered precious wall-painting fragments from the 15th century: on the southern wall of the presbytery there was a Last Judgement with St. Michael Archangel, on the northern wall there is St. George killing the dragon, and Pilate washing his hands, and a part of a damaged Crucifixion scene on the eastern wall, above the Triumphant Arch there is the Coronation of the Virgin, joined by four musicians: angels playing viola, lute, bagpipe and kettledrum. On the sides of the Arch there is a unique picture of St. Hildegard from Bingen – one of the most significant German female saints on the left, and St. Hieronymus with a lion on the right side. According to the narrative pictures the window frames were painted too and the vaulting was decorated with tiny red stars. These paintings are partially restored now, but it is assumed by specialists that following finds are waiting for unveiling on the other walls in the church.
