A forerunner of radar, acoustic mirrors were built on the south and northeast coasts of England between about 1916 and the 1930s. The ‘listening ears’ were intended to provide early warning of incoming enemy aircraft.
Two experimental acoustic mirrors were built on an area known as The Roughs just west of Hythe in Kent. A 20' mirror was built first, then a 30' mirror added nearby.
The 20' mirror sadly succumbed to land slips and apparently toppled over onto its face the 70's. The base can still be visited east of GZ at location

The 30' dish is in poor condition due to the ravishes of time, but is still worth the visit at location

Parking I would suggest Burmarsh road N51º03.932' E01º03.157' as you can cross the Royal Military Canal there and try out a modern acoustic mirror, by standing at one side of the bridge while talking to someone on the other side.
Over the bridge take the left path and a short way along take the path on the right up the hill.
Stout walking shoes are recommended as well as long trousers during nettle season.
Please post a photo of you standing next to the dish as this will serve as a record of its condition over time.
Also enjoy the lovely echoes you get from standing in front.
