Geocache Description:

In the late 1800's/early 1900's, there was an EL on Fifth Avenue. In 1890 a depot was built here and was called Union Depot. Union Depot was a turnaround and transfer point for steam trains. In 1917 Union Depot was used as an elevated car inspection shop. By 1940 the shop was closed and the EL torn down. In 1944 Union Depot now named Fifth Avenue Depot, began operating as a bus garage. Fifth Avenue Depot was demolished and rebuilt in 2 stages. The 1st stage opened in 1984 & the 2nd in 1988. The depot was re-named the "Jackie Gleason Depot", named in honor of actor Jackie Gleason who played bus driver Ralph Kramden on the T.V. sitcom "The Honeymooners".
