Lester Bowles Pearson

Lester Bowles Pearson (Liberal Party of Canada) became Prime Minister of
Canada on April 22, 1963, and served in that office until April 19, 1968.
Highlights of his term in office include making Medicare universal in 1966, the
creation of the Canada Pension Plan and the adoption of a new national flag,
both in 1965. Before becoming Prime Minister, Mr. Pearson was the Leader of the
Opposition from 1958 to 1963, President of the United Nations in 1952 and
Canada’s Secretary of State for External Affairs from 1948 to 1957. He was
first elected to Parliament in 1948 and prior to that served as Canada’s
Ambassador to the United States from 1944 to 1946. Mr. Pearson was a career
diplomat and in 1957 he won the Nobel Peace Prize for his peacekeeping
activities around the world. He was born in Newton Brook, Ontario, on April 23,
1897, and died in Ottawa, Ontario, on December 27, 1972.

Lester Bowles Pearson (Parti libéral du Canada) est devenu Premier ministre
du Canada le 22 avril 1963 et a occupé ce poste jusqu’au 19 avril 1968. Parmi
les faits saillants de son mandat, mentionnons la création d’un régime
universel d’assurance-maladie en 1966, la création du Régime de pensions du
Canada et l’adoption d’un nouveau drapeau national en 1965. Avant de devenir
Premier ministre, M. Pearson avait été chef de l’opposition de 1958 à 1963,
président des Nations Unies en 1952 et secrétaire d’État aux Affaires extérieures
de 1948 à 1957. Il a été élu pour la première fois au Parlement en 1948 et
avait, auparavant, été ambassadeur du Canada aux États-Unis de 1944 à 1946. 
Diplomate de carrière, il a obtenu, en 1957, le prix Nobel de la paix pour ses
efforts en faveur du maintien de la paix dans le monde. Né à Newton Brook en
Ontario le 23 avril 1897, il est décédé à Ottawa le 27 décembre 1972.
