Geocache Description:

Historic dam site in North East Tasmania

Mt Paris Dam was designed in 1935 for Mt Paris Tin mines and built in 1936 as the Morning Star Dam. It was connected to the Mt Paris Mine by an 11 Km water race. The dam is a re-inforced concrete dam, having a length of 250 metres and a height of 16 metres. From 1939-1985 the dam had several owners, then in June 1985 an opening was blasted at the base of the dam wall to allow the natural flow of the Cascade River, the dam had been empty since 1970. In 1994 further alterations were made to prevent the dam holding water. This structure is an important part of the mining heritage of North East Tasmania and an interesting place to visit. The gravel Rd to the dam is suitable for 2wd vehicles. Cache is a small cammo container - contains logbook, pencil and swaps.
