Rather than do a lot of copy and past from web sites I will just write a bit of what I know about 1308 and include links to web sites that the reader can go to and read more about 1308

The mighty 1308 was relative young when she was retired in 1956. Built the same year I was born 1949 she stayed busy pulling coal cars from the coal fields in southern WV to Russell KY until she was retired. She was later donated to Collis P. Huntington Railroad Historical Society. I remember in 1962 there was a track laid down the bank from the C&O main line to the park at 14th Street West. Of course as a young person I was curious why they put those tracks down the bank to nowhere. So I watched and one day I saw this massive train steam engine sitting in the park. I learned later in life The Collis P. Huntington Railroad Historical Society was creating a museum on the spot. I got to visit the train engine before there was a fence around it. You can read more about 1308 at the web sites listed.

The museum is open free every Sunday from 2-5 P.M., from the Sunday after Memorial Day to September 30th so long as a volunteer can be accessible

Collis P Huntington The man that the city of Huntington, WV was named after.

Here is a bit of history about the man that the city of Huntington is named after. I knew that he had been involved in building the C & O railroad now part of the Chessie System. But I did not know until I researched for this cache that Collis P. Huntington was also one of the Big Four of western railroading who built the Central Pacific Railroad as part of the first U.S. transcontinental railroad. He was involved in building the railroad tracks from California to where the Golden spike was driven to celebrate the connection of the first transcontinental railroad. You can read more about him at the above link.

So go by find the cache take some pictures and have a good time. If you go on a Sunday when they are open you can get some good shots with no fence in the way.
