Geocache Description:

Founded in 1964, the Madison Land Conservation Trust (MLCT) was one of the first Land Trusts, both in Connecticut and the nation. This is the seventeenth of the 21 trails (for technical reasons, they are no longer in order). My plan is to place at least one cache on each trail to encourage exploration of these wonderfully preserved natural resources in "my own back yard".

Please see the map on the Madison Land Trust website (hyperlink above). For further information about these trails, a book with comprehensive descriptions of each trail is available at the Madison public library and for sale at RJ Julia Bookstore.
This trail is contained entirely on private lands within a Conservation Easement along the Neck River.
It should soon become apparent why this is 4-star terrain on this 2-stage multi. It should also be apparent by now that I love hiking along rivers, and that I have a special fondness for the Neck River (it runs through my back yard, a bit upstream from here). The trail will get you to both sides of the Neck, twice. This is also something of a historical trail. Right before you cross the river at the northern end of the trail loop, you'll see a pile of stones near the dam, initialled and dated by the Madison and Guilford selectmen, indicating when they periodically met to reconfirm their common border (remind you of the cairn on MLCT-17?) Just across the river are the remnants of an early 1800's lumber mill which was used to saw ship's timbers for several local boat builders. The dam and sluiceway were part of that mill construction. The owner of the adjacent property (you'll see a beautiful, large, English Estate style brick house to your left as you walk down the sluiceway breastwork), keeps this part of the trail meticulous. He came over and we talked for a while as I was standing there, admiring the area. He said he doesn't see many people on this trail - I told him there would probably be more coming, and told him about geocaching. He was very receptive and happy to show off his picturesque corner of this wonderful trail. Tell him "Bob says hello" if you see him or his small white dog "Abbie". The final is a large rubbermaid lock-n-lock with the usual contents and room for more.
.
Congratulations to ConnArtist for a hard fought, true 4-star FTF!
