Geocache Description:

Abels Bay - a bay with an elusive history without a cache on the road from Cygnet to Gordon...
Photo thanks to OldSaint.

Abel Janszoon Tasman, a Dutch explorer discovered Tasmania on the 24th November 1642. He first encountered the west coast north of Macquarie Harbour and made his way around the south east coast. He was blown out to sea coming around the outside of Bruny Island hence the name Storm Bay. There is no readily available information to suggest he actually came ashore at Abels Bay, but we assume that this spot is named after this intrepid explorer. Whether or not he had a mate called Will is up to conjecture but we are sure any competant geocacher will be willing and able to locate this cache. If you do know anything about this history of this location please add it in your log. The local coastcare group has been hard at work here, so please keep to the newly marked tracks. Follow the track and don't let the little cachers run off into the bush on the left side as there is a long drop off the cliff. This is an interesting location as there are a few large piles that look like old mine diggings since it is across the water from Lymington and the only GOLD in the southeast. The sandstone platform has many pools and mussels and oysters for those who enjoy looking at such things. The sandstone platform in the bay on the right side of the point (Kangaroo Bay) has old rusted iron tracks going out into the sea. Eric Guiler's book "Gone and almost forgotten" lists 3 jettys in Abel's Bay itself: There was a Government jetty in the middle of the head of the bay from where apples, firewood and produce were exported. There was another jetty with rails and a handtrolley , but all that remained in 1994 was a well build stone abutment in the middle of the bay. On the east side of Abel's Pt, is a third derelict jetty that consisted of 3 bays with a concrete approach in 1994.
