A rock-hop up beautiful Currumbin Creek will bring you to a lovely set of falls. We don't know if they have name, so we claimed them for ourselves and want to share this location with fellow cachers. The cache is NOT at the published coordinates, but you'll need to go there to find it. Allow 2-3 hours return.
We were looking for a way up to West Cougal & Boyd's Butte from Currumbin Creek. We scored a fail on that, but we did find this hidden gem.
You'll need to be comfortable with off-track scrambling and be reasonably fit. Sturdy footwear, good balance and a head for heights would also help. There are a couple of tricky bits near the falls hence the high terrain rating. Do not attempt this after heavy rain.
Park in the Cougals NP Section car park at the top of Currumbin Creek Road and head up to the remains of the old saw mill. Hop the fence behind the mill and follow the remains of the logging trail down to the creek. At WP1 is a NP warning sign. You'll need to use information from the sign to decipher the clue you collect from the falls at the published coordinates.
Continue up the creek, hopping from one side to the other following a path (of sorts) which follows the remaining sections of the old logging trail. You'll encounter a couple of side creeks and some nice cascades and waterholes. Keep to the main creek until you reach WP2 at the base of Herbz Falls.
Here you'll leave the creek bed and head up left steeply, following the base of the cliff towards a huge cedar tree and a massive fallen log. Turn right behind the log, duck underneath and cross the top of a small waterfall taking great care not to fall over the edge!
Scramble up the far bank and skirt round towards the published coordinates at the top of the falls. Here you'll have a spectacular view of the falls both up and down the creek and is a great place to stop for a rest and a picnic.
You'll see a lone palm tree approx. 15m tall growing out of a rock in the creek bed just below you. On this tree are 2 sets of carved initials. We would like to stress at this point that we were not responsible for the carving of these initials, no trees were harmed during the placing of this cache and we do not condone this sort of behaviour. We are guilty, however, of shamelessly using this eco-vandalism in the placement of this cache and the pursuit of our sport. We hope you'll forgive us.
GZ is way back down the creek at:-
S 28 13.?&!
E 153 22.$@%
To find it:-
1) Replace the symbols with letters you found on the tree.
Where:-
$ = First letter upper set.
! = Second letter upper set.
? = First letter lower set.
& = Second letter lower set.
2) Decode the letters to numbers using the NP warning sign at WP1.
Where:-
$ = How many of this letter in the main title.
! = How many of this letter in the subtitle.
& = How many of this letter in 4th bullet point.
? = How many of this letter in last bullet point.
@ = $ plus $.
% = ? divided by 3.
Checksum: - $+!+?+&+@+%=18
Enjoy!
N.B. In the logbook you'll find a number which you'll need to find our "Herbz Challenge" cache (visit link)
