Information
St John’s Church is located within the Diocese of Derby and is a member of the Ashbourne Benefice. The church was built in 1871 at a cost of £8,000 to accommodate a congregation which had split off from St Oswald’s Church. Its benefactor, Francis Wright of Osmaston Manor, is thought to have had a disagreement with the clergy of St Oswald’s regarding the allocation of private pews. St John’s originally opened as a free church with a Board of Trustees formed by Francis Wright, Marcus Wright, the Rev’d Henry Wright, John Wright, Thomas Orme and William Marple. However, the church joined the Church of England as a Peculiar, being a church without a parish, in 1883. The church is governed by the Board of Trustees today and sits within the Parish of Ashbourne.
The church is constructed of coursed pitched faced local sandstone from Mayfield and designed in the Romanesque revival style with a semi-circular headed window and door openings. There are two aisles leading through the nave to an apsidal chancel. The church has an imposing western tower which houses one bell and a clock and acts as the main entrance to the building. A number of alterations were made to the interior of the church towards the end of the 20th century to provide local space for performing arts. The Board of Trustees also oversee St John’s Community Hall at the rear of the church.
