This is another cache in the Post Box series. When placing the first caches, the post box at Garthorpe was situated in the church wall and was therefore not suitable for a nano cache. The post box has now been replaced in a new location thereby enabling us to place a further cache in the series.
We nearly got caught out whilst placing the cache - Mr Fox was recording the co-ordinates when the postman arrived to empty the box; there was a further delay as a lady with crutches waved to stop the postman as she had a letter to post. We were finally left alone to place the cache.
This cache is a nano with a magnet in the bottom - please ensure you replace it carefully for those who come after you.
It is not required for you to move, disturb or climb anything to locate this cache, the hint should make it very obvious.
Important Note: The log book is quite tight inside the container and will probably get tighter as the roll is used more - it is therefore recommended that you bring along a pair of tweezers, as well as a pen for signing.
The Village
Garthorpe is a village and civil parish in Leicestershire. It is about five miles east of Melton Mowbray. The parish includes the villages of Garthorpe and Coston, and is near to Saxby (in Freeby parish), Wymondham, Buckminster and Sproxton. The parish has a population of about 100
Garthorpe Church
St Mary's Church is a redundant Anglican church and has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building; it is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.
The oldest fabric in the church is in the two arcades which date from the early 13th century. Alterations were made to the aisles and chancel in the 14th century, and in the following century the tower and the clerestory were added. Restoration of the church was carried out by J. Day of Leicester in 1895–96. In recent years it has been noted that the north wall of the north aisle is leaning outwards and that cracks are present in that wall and elsewhere in the church. These are being monitored, and in 2009 it was decided to underpin the wall of the north aisle.
Garthorpe Racecourse
Garthorpe racecourse is widely recognised as the finest point-to-point course in the UK, and also hosts other events such as the Belvoir Hunt team chase and hunter trials. Hunt-related events at Garthorpe are held by invitation of the Belvoir Hunt.
The racecourse is managed by The Melton Hunt Club on behalf of landowner Buckminster Estates. The Melton Hunt Club maintains the permanent infrastructure - track, fences and stewards' enclosure while the committees who run each race-day are responsible for any temporary features such as signage and roped-off areas.
There are currently five race-days each year. Four hunts - the Belvoir, Cottesmore, Quorn and Meynell & South Staffordshire - are each invited to organise one race-day. The Melton Hunt Club itself also organises its own race-day.
