THE FIRST TRAIN ARRIVED IN NEWCASTLE IN 1890 AND THE RAILWAY STATION WAS MAJOR HUB OF ACTIVITY DURING THE WAR. THE BOERS USED IT TO TRANSPORT WAGONS, SUPPLIES LIKE GUNS, AMMUNITION FOOD AND TROOPS TO LADYSMITH.
TODAY ONLY BARREN PLATFORMS ARE SILENT REMINDER OF THE ONCE IMPOSING RAILWAY STATION.
