Geocache Description:

English:
The mining area of Provence and the thermal power plant of Gardanne are two main elements of the industrial boom of the city of Gardanne during the last century.

Eight coal mines have produced the coal burnt in the thermal power plant to provide the electricity for the extremely energy-hungry alumina plant Pechiney nearby.

The thermal power plant of Gardanne produces today 825MW of electricity in two blocks. Being equipped with the latest technology to reduce the emissions of sulphur, nitric acid and dust, it is - hard to imagine - still at the origin of one quarter of the CO2 emissions of the department Bouches du Rhone. Since 2003 the coal is coming no longer from the local sources, but is imported from South Africa, Chile, Brezil, Australia and Russia. A disastrous environmental balance !

Here we let you discover the remainders of a giant conveyor that was connecting the coal mine "puits Z" with the plant - over a distance of 800m. During the years, millions of tons of coal, extracted 1000m below the surface took this way.
