Seeing that I have a strong interest in the paranormal, and we have a number of rail trails in our area of the province, I figured it was time to start the Lineside Legends series, devoted to those tales of the weird and ghostly which seem to spring up around railroads.
This cache gets its name from one of the more widely told tales of The Railway Children. The story usually gets it's start with a school bus load of children stalling on the tracks, and meeting their demise when it is struck by a passing train. Thereafter, if you park your vehicle across the tracks, (not ever recommended btw), and leave it in neutral gear, your vehicle will be pushed clear of the tracks by the spirits of the children who perished. In a few cases, they are seen and heard as well, but for the most part, just the movement of the vehicle is apparent. There have been incidents of handprints forming in flour and other substances placed on the bumpers of vehicles used in testing these stories. It should be noted that for the most part, these stories are no more than urban legend, but there are a few cases worldwide with scientifically documented phenomena, at railway crossings with the right history attached to them....I'll leave it for you to decide.
