Historic Massie was the quintessential Ontario rural hamlet. It was well located in a fertile agricultural area at the crossroads of Concession 6 and Number 3 Sideroad where a mill pond could be constructed on the Big Head River. What is amazing is how well the hamlet met the needs of the surrounding rural community. There was a church, a school, a general store and post office, a blacksmith shop, a wagon shop, a shoemaker, the Temperance Hall, the Orange Hall and the Athletic field as well as not one but three mills. (It is said that there were also two taverns but these did not last long.) It is obvious that Massie was the focus of a vibrant rural community. While a number of these institutions no longer exist, a strong sense of community survives and flourishes in Massie. (massiemessenger.ca)
This geocache is placed in honour of the one-room schoolhouse at Massie, known as U.S.S. #11 Holland and Sydenham School. The school was established in 1871, and the current building is 95 years old. My grandmother taught at this school, my father and his siblings as well as I and my siblings all learned the 3 R’s in this building. The school was closed in June of 1965, but the community has operated it as a hall ever since. Many musicians have boasted that they have played at “Massie Hall”.
This geocache is also placed to commemorate the wedding of my daughter in the Massie United Church next door on October 15, 2011. The couple became engaged beside the Massie Millpond on Thanksgiving Sunday, 2010, and they accompanied me when I found the Massie Hills geocache on 10/10/10, so it is only fitting that I dedicate this cache to their marriage.
U.S.S. #11 Holland & Sydenham School is a travel bug hotel. You are looking for a naturally camouflaged ammo can. When it was placed, it contained 6 travel bugs and 3 geocoins. If you can, please trade trackables. The can is also packed with trading swag, and there is a FTF prize of a Tim’s card.
