Geocache Description:

** Congrats to Grey Falcons on the FTF! **

The Geocaching History Quest is a series of caches that are at or near important historical sites that can include the places, people, or events that are part of local, regional, national, or international history.  These caches should be a good lesson of the rich history and better understanding for anyone that visits the area that the caches bring you to.  This history surrounds us almost everywhere we go and hopefully will not be forgotten through our stories and caches that are part of each and every one of us.

As always, with ANY geocache hunt, PERSONAL SAFETY is of the utmost
importance and BE AWARE of your surroundings at all times.

1958 Dairy Delivery Trucks

The nearby independent dairy had been serving the area since 1922 with it's fresh products and excellent service. It was unique and a Leamington Gem. Everything about it was local, from the source of the milk, to the workers and their families, as well as most of their customers.

The dairy was on the east side of downtown between a brand new medical building and a residential neighbourhood. It seemed strangely out of place, especially when you enter into the paneled office/store and are greeted by happy workers who are stomping around in their wellies boots. A 4L bag of milk would cost you a little more than some brands of milk, and eggnog (a popular treat that was said to not last long!) was also a bit more expensive as well.

These are two of the old plastic milk tokens
people would put on the top of the empty
milk bottles instead of money to buy the next
batch of home-delivered milk.

However, the higher cost was with tax and friendly service. They had a great selection of milk products including 1%, 2%, homogenized, cream, etc.

Two of the glass bottles that were used long ago.

As with many family-run independent businesses over the last few years, the economy took a bite out of things much more than what the businesses could support.

The Graphic on the side of the Milk Cartons

In early August 2009, the announcement was made that the dairy would be closing because of the economy. Soon thereafter the business closed and the families were forever changed.

Leamington as a whole also lost something that day... part of it's heritage and home-grown flavor.

If nothing else, this Cache is a dedication to what once was a proud local company that was a Leamington gem and many folks will remember for years to come.

....and it will be missed.

Enjoy the hunt on this as much as i've enjoyed the hide. :)
