Geocache Description:

The natural bridges you see are the remains of lava tube roof which collapsed.

Lava tubes are formed either by lava channels which have crusted over or from pahoehoe flows in which the lava continues to flow subsurface. Eventually, the source of the flow will stop and the lava in the tube will continue to move and drain the tube downhill. Over time sections of the lava tube roof will collapse and allow access. When most of the roof has collapsed, you are left with small sections which form natural bridges. The ravine you see before you is a collapsed lava tube and all of the basaltic rock laying on the bottom of the ravine is the remains of the roof. Further east you can explore a section of the lave tube which still remains. Other noteable lava tube earthcaches in the area include the GC1DJTR Guler Ice Caves and GCZ8ZQ Ape Cave. To log this cache, email me the following information. Do not list the answer in your log or the log will be deleted. Logs without an email answer will be deleted. The email should be sent prior to logging this cache. 1. How many natural bridges do you see? 2. How many trees grow at the north end of bridge? 3. How many horses did Captain George McClellan have? (from sign near the parking) If the sign is missing don't worry about this question. Photographs are appreciated but not required.
