Auf unserer Wandertour rund um die Schmücke kamen wir auch an diesem wunderbaren Gipfel vorbei. Trotz wunderbarem Aussichtsturm und vielen Möglichkeiten zum Rasten und Verweilen, trafen wir zu unserer Überaschung jedoch keinen Schatz an. Aus diesem Grund beschlossen wir kurzfristig: hier muss einer hin!
Der Große Finsterberg ist ein Gipfel im Thüringer Wald in der Nähe des Rennsteig - einem der berühmtesten Wanderwege Deutschlands. Mit seinen 944 Metern ist der Finsterberg der dritthöchste Berg in Thüringen. Auf der Hochebene angekommen bietet sich eine fantastische Sicht über den gesamten Thüringer Wald und bis weit hinein in das Thüringer Becken. Ebenfalls sind der Kickelhahn, der Ringberg bei Suhl, der Dolmar bei Meiningen sowie die beiden noch höheren Berge Thüringens (Großen Beerberg mit 983 m und Schneekopf mit 978 m) zu sehen.
Starten kann man eine Wanderrunde unter anderem am Kreuzweg, wo man ebenfalls sein Auto abstellen kann. Zusätzlich lässt sich die Runde mit weiteren Caches kombinieren, etwa dem direkt am Parkplatz, der alten Tränke oder auch der Ilm-Quelle.
Ein Blick in die Historie des Großen Finsterberges zeigt, dass es bereits der dritte Cache ist, der hier liegt. Der erste lag von 2004 bis 2007, allerdings wurden Dose und Versteck durch einen Sturm zerstört. Den zweiten, eine Multicache, gab es von 2008 bis 2010. Ständige "Umbauten" durch die Forstwirtschaft haben diesen "erledigt" (Vielen Dank an rudi_pd für die Infos). Hoffen wir, dass alle guten Dinge 3 sind und der kleine ein langes Leben vor sich hat.

On our trip today around the Schmücke we climbed this beautiful mountain. Although it comes along with a nice look-out and lots of possibilities for taking a break we were totally surprised that there was no cache at all! Therefor we immediatly decided: let's hide one here!
The Großer Finsterberg (direct translation: large mountain of gloominess) is a mountain peak in the Thuringian Forest near the Rennsteig, which is one of the most famous hiking paths in Germany. With its 944 meters (about 3097 feet) the Große Finsterberg is the third highest mountain in Thuringia. Ariving on the plateau you'll have an amazing panoramic view across the whole Thuringian Forest and far into the Thüringer Becken (to the north). The Kickelhahn near Ilmenau and the Ringberg near Suhl can be seen as well. The same holds for the Dolmar near Meiningen as well as the only mountains in Thuringia, which are higher than the Große Finsterberg (große Beerberg with 983 meters and Schneekopf with 978 meters).
You might start your trip at the Kreuzweg, where a parking area is available for free. Aditionally the hiking trip can perfectly be combined with several other caches located for example directly at the parking area, near the Alte Tränke or at the Ilm-Quelle.
According to the history of the Große Finsterberg, this cache is already the third one located at that place. The first one was hidden in 2004 and destroyed by a storm in 2007. A second version - a multicache - was placed in 2008 but had to yield to superior forces in terms of lumbermen (Many thanks to rudi_pd for this information). Let's hope that all good things come in threes and that this cache will have a long stay at this wonderful place.
