Geocache Description:

In August 2012 the UK Mega Event is coming to Cartmel in Cumbria. This walk up Hampsfell is one of a varied series of events supporting this Mega Event. It is hosted by Phil (of PhilPamandRob) supported by other members of the North West Mega Event Team.

2012 UK Mega Event

Alfred Wainwright was a walker who fell in love with the Lakeland fells. He is famous for his series of seven “Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells” which he compiled between 1952 and 1966. They were created by hand with meticulous attention to detail, for his own benefit, rather than for publication. They detail many routes up 214 of Lakelands major peaks, and have become bibles for many modern day fell walkers.

Having completed the seven guides he moved on to write books covering the Pennine Way and Coast to Coast Walk, before returning to Lakeland and writing ”The Outlying Fells of Lakeland” in 1974. This was his last guidebook, and he subsequently focussed on a series of larger sketchbooks.

When & Where :
Monday 6th August 2012

Start 10:00am for the full walk from The Clock Tower, Church Hill, Grange-over-Sands. For the shorter walk, join the full walk at about 10:30am at the junction of the bridleway on Grange Fell Road.

The event will actually be at the summit of Hampsfell between about 11:30am and 12:30pm, where those present will be able to sign the event logbook. This caters for those who wish to make their own way to the summit, maybe on foot from Cartmel to the west.

We’ll adopt a leisurely pace and both long and short walks should finish where they started before 14:00pm

Details :
This walk is a circular walk up Hampsfell (The Hospice) starting from, and returning to Grange-over-Sands, following the route as detailed on pages 58-65 of Wainwright’s “The Outlying Fells of Lakeland”. It is about a 3 ½ miles walk with approximately 700ft of ascent. It is not too difficult a walk for anyone who does not mind hills, and easy for an experienced fell walker. Dogs are welcome to come on the walk, but should remain on leads, as these fells are the home to many sheep.

It must be stressed that everyone partaking in the walk is responsible for their own safety. It is NOT a guided walk, rather a group walking together, where various members know the route being taken. Although the route is following established roads, tracks & paths, some stretches are steep, whilst others are rough under foot.

Hampsfell is only 727ft high, but it is still a Lakeland fell where the weather can change very rapidly. Everyone should be properly prepared for a fell walk by wearing and bringing :
- Walking Boots
- Waterproof clothing (cagoule or similar)
- Warm clothing
- Drinks and food
- A map and compass (and know how to use them!)
- A camera (for the excellent views North & West to the main Lakeland fells).

The ‘full route’ will start at 10:00am at the Clock Tower, Church Hill, Grange-over-Sands and follow Grange Fell Road West for just under a mile. This is the steepest part of the walk! Those opting for the shorter walk should wait here on the roadside at the end of the bridleway for the main group to arrive at about 10:30am. The route then turns off the road and heads North (soon leaving the bridleway) crossing the fells to the very distinctive Hospice on the summit of Hampsfell.

The Hospice, Hampsfell

Weather permitting; we’ll have a stop on the summit for lunch. This is the event location and where attendees will be invited to sign the logbook. Those making their own way to the summit should aim to be here between approximately 11:30am and 12:30pm. The unusual Hospice on the summit was provided by a pastor of Cartmel in the 19th century "for the shelter and entertainment of travellers over the fell" and is an excellent viewpoint for photographs. Wainwright describes it as “ an elevated ridge of Limestone overlooking the Kent estuary on one side and enjoying a wide prospect of Lakeland on the other.” Maybe we’ll also have time to play a few games (if breezy why not pack a kite?). The descent will then follow a path just South of East until it meets the top of Eggerslack Wood. The track then heads South to a junction near High Farm. Those on the shorter walk will follow the track West, then South West back to their starting point, whilst those on the full route will follow the other track South East, then South back to Grange-over-Sands.

For those wishing to make their own way to the summit event, maps show the Cistercian Way heading east from Cartmel up to the summit of Hampsfell. There is another footpath path slightly further north that could be used for the return route making it into a circular walk.

Please note, If the weather is particularly bad, we reserve the right to change the walk, or abandon it all together on the grounds of safety.
