The year is 1942. You are part of a German U-Boat crew that has just been captured. You and your crewmates have been brought to Bowmanville – to Prisoner of War Camp 30 where you will remain for the rest of World War 2. Built in 1925 as a training school for boys, this site is the last remaining intact WWII POW camp in Canada. Approximately 700 German POWs were interred here from 1941 to 1945, including several high ranking officers. There are roughly 17 buildings on the 100-acre site, built in the Prairie-style architecture. From the road you can see Haus IV, the largest of the bunk houses and site of the famous tunnel escape attempt which was discovered when the ceiling collapsed from the weight of the dirt stored in the rafters. Also near the road is the 2-story Generals’ House, cafeteria and some out buildings, such as the mechanical building. The large boxy structure in the heart of the grounds held the gymnasium and indoor swimming pool. Unfortunately the Administration building, which also housed the stage where POWs performed concerts and plays, was lost to arson and had to be torn down due to safety issues. After World War 2, the site reverted to use for schooling, including temporarily housing St. Stephen’s Catholic High School while new facilities were being built.
