Welcome to Route 66 kiwi style, but before you commence your drive around the scenic back roads you will have to complete some research on the history of Route 66 to answer the following questions. Once completed, use the answers to work out the coordinates for each of the 66 cache hides.

A – Second last digit in the year the Interstate Highway Act was signed

B – First digit of the day of the official birth of Route 66

C – Number of states the highway crosses

D – Second digit in the year the highway was removed from the highway system

E – First digit in the date that Bill Clinton signed the Route 66 Preservation Bill

F – Second digit in the year the highway was included on the list of the 100 most endangered sites

G – Last digit in the year the highway was removed from the highway system

H – Second last digit in the year that Bobby Troup wrote “Get your kicks on route 66”

I – Second last digit in the year the highway was signed into law as being a US Highway

J – Last digit in the year the highway was established

K – Second last digit in the year the entire route was finally paved

L – First (and last) digit in the route number

M - Last digit in the year that the Route 66 Association was founded

Using the numbers obtained you can now work out the final coordinates as follows;

S 36 3I.HDI

E 174 3C.EBG

Route 66.3 Checksum (last 4 numbers of each) = 34

Almost there, but before you set off, make sure you fill the tank and pack the picnic basket as there are no gas stations or shops along the way and as there is limited cell phone reception make sure you let someone know where you are going.

We recommend completion of the trail in daylight as you will be traveling on some narrow and windy, gravel roads so take care, keep the speed down and watch out for the motorcyclists who use the road for their weekend jaunts. You will find safe parking for at least one vehicle at each location.

We hope you enjoy your road trip, make sure you stop to take in the views from the various vantage points and keep a lookout for fantails, kingfishers and pukekos that you should be able to see along the way.
