In August 2012 the UK Mega Event is coming to Cartmel in Cumbria. This walk across Morecambe Bay, led by the "Guide to the Sands", Cedric Robinson MBE, is one of a varied series of events supporting this Mega Event.
When & Where :
Sunday 12th August 2012
Meet PROMPLY at 13:00pm at Arnside Pier.
We expect to be at the event coords at roughly 14:30pm
Warning :
The sands of Morecambe Bay can be treacherous, with both deep channels and quick-sands. When the tides come in they can travel far faster then a man can run! Only attempt to cross the bay with an Official Guide who knows of both the dangers and the safe route to be followed.
Details :
This is an excellent opportunity to take an historic and spectacular walk across Morecambe Bay, with the Guide to the Sands, Cedric Robinson MBE. The walk is approximately 7.5 miles in length and will take about 3 hours to complete. Low tide on this Sunday is early afternoon, enabling this walk to take place. It will involve wading across the main channel of the River Kent, which may be knee to thigh deep.
The best way to dress for the occasion is to carry a small rucksack containing a change of clothing, and a towel, plus anything you might want to eat or drink en route (other items can be left in cars at Kents bank for the end of the walk). Even in summer it can get cold out in the Bay, so you need something warm and waterproof on your top half. For your legs and feet, a pair of shorts or old tracksuit bottoms with old trainers on your feet should suffice. The sand across the Bay is ridged in many places, and this is very hard on your feet if you think you might walk barefoot. Cedric can do it, but many others suffer!
Cedric receives the princely sum of £15 a year from the Queen for fulfilling his duties. This is a 'private' booking, and not part of his duties as guide, so it’s proposed asking if anyone attending would consider making a donation to Cedric. Their will be ample time at the end of the walk to chat and thank Cedric, and pass it to him - he'll be well pleased. However, this is totally optional and there is no obligation to donate.
Logistics :
For groups with multiple vehicles it is quite easy to leave one car at the end of the walk and use another to drive around to the start. Allow plenty time as parking in Arnside can be difficult. Afterwards, it will be necessary to drive back to Arnside to collect the vehicle left there.
An easier alternative approach is to park at Kent's Bank and catch the train across the viaduct to Arnside. It’s only a 10 minute rail journey and a one way ticket costs about £2.70. Once at Arnside station, just turn right towards the centre of the village and it’s a short walk to the Pier. Again, leave plenty spare time in case of train delays etc.
If you plan to come on this spectacular walk across Morecambe bay, please log a “will attend” indicating the numbers of adults/children in your group.
Please remember to keep visiting the North West Mega website for the latest information on the UK’s 5th Annual Mega Event in 2012.
