The moon, for the month of December is at its fullest at
6:38 am on Saturday the 10th.
On December 10th, the sun sets at 4:42 pm and the moon
rises at 5:01 pm.
This is just about the best night to view the moon at its
fullest, after it rises today! Come join us for our second
meet-n-greet from atop Potato Mountain. The event will start early
in daylight and continue into the evening to watch the full moon
rise over the San Gabriel mountains. The event begins at 4:00 pm
(before the sun sets) and the event will end at 7:30 pm (after the
moon has risen to give us light during the walk back out).
Please do bring your bugs and coins for trading, discovering, or
just to show them off. There are no food or beverages nearby, so if
it's a little chilly BYOHC, though at recent events people have
brought snacks, beverages, and pizza (in a tupperware of course and
yes, it was still warm!) to share with all. If you plan on bringing
something to share, be sure to post it in a note. Please remember
to dress appropriately for the temperature and weather conditions,
as this event is outdoors and rain or shine. The terrain leading to
Potato Mountain is a well maintained dirt fire road with an
elevation gain of 1,100' in aproximately 2.2 miles from the parking
area. The walk in should take most people about an hour to an hour
and a half. No permit is required to park at this turnout.
It is interesting to note that often, calendars indicating moon
phases may be off by a day when intended for use in a different
time zone. Don't be late or you just might miss out on this magical
time as the sun sets and the full moon rises.
