Geocache Description:

Near to Haldon Belvedere a fairly easy 200m walk from the free layby/carpark - be careful not to block the entrance. Path sometimes gets a little muddy.

Please write an interesting log, not just TFTC or a cut and paste - I enjoy reading about your visit and it's very boring to get dull logs. Be inventive!

The Castle of Lawrence of India…

Haldon Belvedere, known to locals as Lawrence Castle, is an attractive triangular tower built in 1785 by Sir Robert Palk, one time Governor of Madras. He built it to commemorate his friend General Stringer Lawrence who formed and commanded the East India Company Army - as well as being one of the richest men in England in the late 1700’s, owning nearby Haldon House and the surrounding estate of some 11,600 acres!

The tower was built on a Neolithic settlement mound and extensively renovated in the mid 1990’s to the tune of half a million pounds. Notably, King George III stayed here and Marconi was said to have carried out radio tests from the site.

Built on the highest point for some distance, the views from the roof are stunning in all directions. Now used primarily as a wedding venue and has an apartment which can be hired. It’s open to the public (with an admission charge) from 2pm to 5pm from Easter to September.

The main track from the road is called the King's Road and was build for George's carriage so he could avoid the riff-raff on the public highway. Nowadays it's more full of people than the main road when the sun's out!

Cache is placed nearby to the South East on land owned by the Forestry Commission. Sadly the trees block most of what is a stunning view even from ground level, but walk around, it's a nice area. You're off the main trails so shouldn't be muggle-bothered too much but be aware of bikes and horses.

There's a little compass for the FTF, but no big money cash prizes!
