Tokomaru River - Burtton's track
Burtton's track, in the Northern Tararuas, is part of the Te Araroa walkway. It takes you through the ranges from Palmerston North to Shannon. The track can be walked in either direction. The northern access is through Gordon Kear Forest, from Scotts Road off SH57, 5km north of Tokomaru. The southern access is from a car park at the end of Tokomaru Valley Road, a left turn off Mangahao Road behind Shannon.
Neither entrance point is particularly easy to find. There is a locked gate at the northern access through Gordon Kear forest. Vehicles cannot enter, but walkers or cyclists are allowed. It is recommended to check the Te Araroa website for detailed information before setting off.
To walk the full track the estimated time is 6 hours going south, 7 hours going north.
This cache was placed by walking in from the southern access. This part is the historical trail built almost 100 years ago by Jim Burtton, a farmer and land speculator. It is well graded and is an easy, pleasant walk following the Tokomaru river valley - a surprisingly large river - through regenerating bush which makes for a shady walk, but with several attractive clearings.
The cache (125 ml sistema) is placed within 5m of a corrugated iron deer trap (not built by Burtton!). This is in a clearing which makes for a good stopping point out in the open. From the south (Tokomaru Valley Road car park) it is a comfortable 3 hours walk to here.
