Geocache Description:

This "cache within a cache" is located just outside the small town of Pahala, nearby a unique roadside coffee stand that offers some ono local brews and scenic Ka‘u views. Visit this cache during daylight hours for a taste of their java and some lovely verdant scenery OR be the lucky FTF ...

Ka'u is the largest district on Hawai‘i Island (bigger than the entire island of O‘ahu), and one of the least populated. The coastline is rocky and rugged and their lands are used for agriculture (primarily cattle ranching, coffee growing, and macadamia nuts). Since the close of the sugar plantation in recent decades, over 40 small coffee farms have sprouted up on approximately 280 acres within this rural district in southern Hawai'i. The coffee plants are grown in several locales around this region, on small hill-sides and valleys with names like Moa Ula (red rooster), Pear Tree, and Cloud Rest. The coffee cherry is hand-picked, sun-dried, and roasted locally.

In the recent years, Ka'u coffee growers have been gaining international fame for their beans by winning coffee tasting competitions at the Specialty Coffee Association of America Convention. As of earlier this month, Ka‘u coffee beans are even being sold at Starbucks.

The friendly owner's here at this stand welcome visitors to their farm and coffee stand for tastes (during open hours when the gates are not closed) and reluctantly allowed me to add this cache to their property. For me, it's a must stop when I'm passing through Ka'u. If you find yourself geocaching here and the gates are closed, rest assured that there are various other places around the island that you can try this ono brew.

Feel free to wander around the area and enjoy the mac nut trees, coffee plants, roaming chickens, kitties and hand-painted artwork around the property. Please be respectful and leave a donation if you decide to take a cup of joe. And be warned, their "hula blend" is reputed to make you get up and dance. Enjoy the buzzzzzz and the beautiful scenery!
